If you have enjoyed watching us on Gardeners' World and would like to visit Ellicar Gardens in winter, we open for the NGS on 25th Feb, 12noon-4pm.
Ellicar Gardens opens for NGS Charities on Sunday Feb 25th 2018 from 12.00noon - 4.00pm
There is a lot to enjoy and discover. Our prairie style borders are left standing around the main garden with beautiful grasses and seed heads, highlighted by the low winter sun.
In our Winter Garden you will find carpets of hellebores, late snowdrops with early spring bulbs under fragrant flowering winter shrubs and coloured cornus stems.
If you wander quietly through the woodland borders you will spot blackbirds, robins, shy wrens and maybe a blackcap.
In the main garden charms of goldfinches fly around together feeding on winter seed heads and teasels and visitors are always amused watching our noisy sparrows squabbling over cardoon seeds in the Rose Garden.
The bird feeders are busy with tits, finches, robins, blackbirds, woodpeckers and more unusual species.
Winter is a great time for bird watchers to visit.
We have some lovely young specimen trees with extraordinary winter bark and stands of coloured cornus around the gardens inter planted with unusual coloured ornamental willows.
Visitors will also have the chance to say hello to our friendly Rare Breed pets, including Golden Guernsey Goats, Kune Kune Pigs, Hebridean Sheep, Native Ponies, Toulouse Geese, Poultry and the new Llama.
Winter is certainly a beautiful time of year to explore this garden.
